Summary of Research

I'm interested in multi-scale, first principles modeling of lithium-ion batteries using data-driven techniques to improve advanced battery management systems. Renewable energy continues to face important intermittencies in supply--the sun isn't always shining on solar panels and the wind isn't always blowing through wind turbines. To better facilitate global carbon neutrality, renewables demand improved electrical storage and on-demand transfer from battery systems. Lithium-ion batteries stand at the forefront of solving these issues, but cycle life limitations due to active material loss remain confounded by transport, kinetic, and thermodynamic processes all occurring simultaneously at the microstructural detail of electrode interfaces.

Using high performance computing (HPC) resources, I am working towards directly coupling electrode-scale transport models with fine-grained stochastic representations of electrochemical reactions at solid interfaces. At these surfaces, morphologies are determined using particle size and spatial distributions from X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) scans--which when paired with models, can produce high-fidelity realizations of battery degradation. HPC-enabled hypothesis testing of microstructural degradation will then lead me into core insights on battery limitations. Ultimately, I'm hoping to foster rapid exploration of design spaces for these ubiquitous electrochemical reactors of the 21st century.
