The Bicoid morphogen is a transcription factor which stands at the top of a genetic regulatory hierarchy controlling anterior-posterior pattern formation in dipteran embryos. We compare experimental measurements of Bicoid concentration in unfertilized D. melanogaster eggs to simulation to determine the likely means of establishment of the gradient.
