Summary of Research

I am currently working to develop the mathematical and computational tools to cast weakly nonlinear rheology in a more easily understood, data rich framework. Current efforts to quantify and understand these weak nonlinearities suffer from an inability to generalize to different deformation protocols and a poorly understood relationship between different experiments. With inspiration from nonlinear signal processing techniques in fields such as electronics and optics, however, we are able to form a more general representation for nonlinear viscoelasticity. By designing new rheological experiments tailored to this representation, we can efficiently sample from the full weakly nonlinear response space of viscoelastic materials, and quickly build large data sets to describe them. This opens avenues to modern data-driven approaches to rheological analysis, with applications such as material classification, constitutive model selection, and early fault diagnosis.
