Recent advances in the technologies related to quantum computing hardware suggest that devices capable of so-called quantum supremacy may be available in the next few years. In this talk I will introduce general concepts from quantum computing and discuss the implications for applications of quantum computers to hard problems in science. I will review the state of the field and obstacles to applying this new technology to key problems. In particular, I will focus on the application of quantum computers to hard problems in the area of chemistry and materials, and will discuss the challenges and opportunities related to current algorithms. The talk will be designed for a broad scientific audience to bolster understanding of this emerging field. I will close with an outlook for progress in the next few years.
