Developing a robust adaptive mesh refinement scheme for the transport equation has the potential to decrease both computation time and memory requirements if the refining and coarsening of the mesh can be done efficiently. A recently developed piecewise linear finite element spatial discretization appears to be promising for transport on spatial grids that have local refinement, due to certain properties of the piecewise linear basis functions. One focus of my research is the application of the piecewise linear finite element method to the transport equation on locally refined grids in r-z geometry. Another is the development of refinement and coarsening criteria that can be used to efficiently adapt the spatial grid to the transport solution.
