In order to develop a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in sediment transport in near-shore settings, numerical simulations are being performed to calculate the lift and drag forces on sediment particles subject to oscillatory, wall bounded flow. In particular, the significance of the lift and drag forces relative to the buoyancy force is considered. This extends earlier work studying the forces on a particle over a horizontal surface to considering a particle over a rough bottom surface that is more consistent with actual oceanic settings.
