In this talk I discuss the issues involved in modelling turbulent flows using the Flow Simulation Methodology model of Speziale, Fasel, and Bachman, and running those models on parallel computers such as the SGI Origin 3000. The focus is on three methods: parallelizing “by hand” using message-passing libraries (e.g. MPI or PVM), parallelizing “automatically” using vendor-supplied libraries, and recent efforts to parallelize the model itself using ideas inspired by Marsha Berger’s Automatic Mesh Refinement.
