Summary of Research

In the solar interior, energy transport is dominated by photon diffusion processes that give way to convective energy transport at large radii. The location of the boundary between radiative and convective energy transport is well known from helioseismic observation but current solar models struggle to predict the observed boundary location. Simulations suggest that modest adjustments to the iron opacity model can reconcile the disagreement between theory and observation. However, data to validate opacity models in dense, high temperature plasma regimes relevant to the solar interior are sparse. My research at the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics focuses on developing a short-pulse radiative opacity platform for iron opacity measurements in extreme HED conditions. Short-pulse heating enables access to the dense plasma regime by isochorically heating the sample before the onset of hydrodynamic decompression. The experimental platform will also be used to study ultrafast at-depth heating in buried-layer targets.
