Summary of Research

My research focuses on experimental studies of plasma transport in High Energy Density (HED) environments. At the most general level, plasma transport dictates how mass, momentum, and energy flow throughout the medium. Many areas of science, such as Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and stellar evolution modeling, require detailed theories of these transport properties; however, theoretically describing HED plasmas is difficult as quantum degeneracy, many body effects, and coupled modes must be accurately described.
My research is to produce experiments that can differentiate between different transport theories to reduce the uncertainty in our understanding of plasma transport. I primarily conduct my experiments at the OMEGA Laser Facility through the National Laser Users' Facility (NLUF) program. To conduct my experiments, I am developing a new generation of x-ray and nuclear diagnostics which have unprecedented temporal or(and) spatial resolution. These diagnostics not only help in my experimental studies but are also utilized by the wider community and specifically the ICF program.
