Fifteen years ago, the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE NNSA) established the Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship (SSGF) to cultivate and replenish the United States’ corps of nuclear science and technology specialists. The program has since graduated more than 60 fellows who work in areas important to the NNSA: high energy density physics, nuclear science, and materials under extreme conditions and hydrodynamics.
A third of program alumni now work at DOE national laboratories, most of them at one of three defense sites — Sandia, Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories — where fellows complete at least one 12-week research practicum. Most of the rest work in higher education or other defense-related government agencies.
In 2010, Krell launched Stewardship Science, a magazine that showcases the fellows and the fields they work in. At the program's 10th anniversary, alumnus and Livermore physicist Miguel Morales told the publication's readers that the DOE NNSA SSGF “brings an incredible opportunity for people in the labs to access these fantastic students during practicums and for the students to learn what actually happens inside the national labs.” Morales added: “After the practicum, it was extremely clear what my career path would be.”
Beyond the financial suport and the laboratory research experience it offers, the DOE NNSA SSGF has grown a community — of current and former fellows, of laboratory staff and university scientists — who advance science and technology in the national interest, but also maintain friendships and collaborations long after their four fellowship years have ended.
Celebrate With Us
To recognize this milestone, we encourage fellows, alumni and friends to download and display these backgrounds featuring the DOE NNSA SSGF's 15th anniversary logo. Other promotions are planned leading up to and during the 2021 virtual program review, August 10 and 11. Watch for related communication and social media posts, and join in the celebration using the hashtag #DOENNSASSGF15.
