Summary of Research

Current research efforts are focused on determining methods to create efficient hard X-ray detection with ultra-fast imaging capabilities that can mitigate current problems with scintillator technologies such as limitations in decay time response, light yield, and spatial resolution.

Two different approaches are being investigated. First approach is to determine the feasibility of using MOS structures to generate hot electrons in an X-ray absorber and transfer the hot electrons to a semiconductor material and integrating this method to the existing CMOS image sensor platform. The second approach is to investigate efficient absorber, attenuator, or detector materials for and to optimize the existing metal buildup layer-semiconductor thin film high-energy X-ray detector configuration used for radiation therapy and determine the possibility of scaling down the design.
