Derek Macklin, a fourth-year Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) recipient, has received a prestigious scholarship recognizing his academic achievements and leadership.

The Thomas and Stacy Siebel Foundation named Macklin, a Stanford University doctoral candidate, a Siebel Scholar for 2016. He was one of five Stanford bioengineering graduate students to receive the honor, which includes a $35,000 award for his final year of studies.

Macklin, working with Bioengineering Associate Professor Markus Covert, is building a gene-complete, whole-cell computational model of the Escherichia coli bacterium. Such models could be used to computationally design organisms and analyze how genetic changes affect them.

Deans in business, computer science, bioengineering and energy science at some of the world’s top universities choose Siebel Scholars from among graduate students in their final year of studies. The program recognizes these talented students and draws them together into a community of leaders.
