Krell Institute Announces UCES 2008 Award Winners
Ames, IA (November 12, 2008) - The Krell Institute announces the 2008 UCES Awards Program winners.
The winners will be awarded a certificate and cash prize during the Supercomputing Conference
in Austin, TX. Both winners have demonstrated their commitment to computational science in the
undergraduate classroom.
Dr. Rubin Landau, Oregon State University
Presented for publication of A Survey of Computational Physics: Introductory
Computational Science. This text provides comprehensive coverage of modern
issues in computational physics at the upper-division collegiate level. These include
the role of high performance computing, a topic not generally covered in other
texts. Inclusion of a CD-ROM with examples in several programming languages,
animations, visualizations, and tutorials promotes active learning by students.
Dr. Steven Gordon, Ohio Supercomputer Center
Presented for development of an innovative undergraduate minor program in
computational science that spans nine Ohio colleges, including community and
liberal arts colleges and large research universities. The minor program includes a
rich set of courses in computational methods that cover the sciences and can be
shared by all students in the program regardless of the school they attend.
The purpose of the UCES Awards Program is to recognize undergraduate faculty who have
recently developed courses, programs, and/or curricular material. Such contributions
do not need to be broad in scope, but should be innovative and transferable to other
institutions or programs. Faculty at any stage of their careers are encouraged to
apply for the 2009 awards, particularly those who attended any of the several
computational science education workshops (e.g. National Computational Science
Institutes, SCxx Education Programs) along with graduates of computational science
programs who have taken academic positions.
