Krell Institute Announces UCES 2005 Award Winners
Ames, IA (November 15, 2005) – The Krell
Institute is pleased to announce the UCES 2005
award winners. The recipients were recognized at
the UCES luncheon in Seattle, Washington on
November 14.
Ignatios Vakalis, Professor of Math and Computer
Science at Capital University was selected as the
2005 award winner for his development of
Computational Engineering and Science course
material, distribution of web-based tools with
cross-disciplinary impact, and establishment of the
Keck Undergraduate CS&E Consortium. In
addition to recognition at the luncheon, Mr. Vakalis
received a $500 cash prize.
In addition, Honorable Mention was awarded to Tom Murphy,
Professor of Computer Science at Contra Costa College, for
his promotion and enhancement of undergraduate education in
Computational Engineering and Science (CES) through the
development of a portable, eight-node cluster system
suitable for teaching scientific computing and
high-performance computer systems programming.
Mr. Murphy developed the cluster with collaborators
Paul Gray from the University of Northern Iowa and
Charlie Peck from Earlham College (Richmond, IN).
Created to promote and enhance undergraduate education
in computational engineering and science (CES), the
Undergraduate Computational Engineering and Sciences (UCES)
award program encourages further development of innovative
educational resources and programs; recognizes the
achievements of CES educators; and disseminates educational
material and ideas to the broad scientific and engineering
undergraduate community.
