DOE HPCSF TO GRADUATE ITS FIRST FELLOWS

INSIDE SCOOP

>> Erin Parker
University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill

Erin Parker The DOE HPCSF program, which began in 1999, is pleased to note that Erin Parker successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation on August 16th.

Dr. Parker’s degree, from the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill, will be conferred at the next UNC graduation ceremony.  Her thesis is titled “Analyzing the Behavior of Loop Nests in the Memory Hierarchy: Methods, Tools, and Applications.”  While completing her Ph.D. at UNC, she studied computer science and high-performance computing.

Dr. Parker completed her DOE HPCSF practicum at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.  She received her B.S. in computer science and mathematics from the College of William and Mary in 1999, and her M.S. in computer science from UNC in 2001.

Dr. Parker will start a teaching position in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Utah in January of 2005.

>> Steve Deitz
University of Washington

Steve Deitz The DOE HPCSF program is also pleased to announce that Steve Deitz will be graduating from the University of Washington in December with his doctorate in computer science.

While at the University of Washington, Steve studied parallel programming, compilers and architecture.  He focused on increasing the generality of ZPL (Z-level Programming Language).  According to Deitz’s advisor, Larry Snyder, ZPL is “a programming language designed for supercomputers that allow huge problems to be run on huge computers amazingly fast.”

Steve completed his DOE HPCSF practicum at Los Alamos National Laboratory.  He received his bachelor’s degree in computer science and mathematics from Bowdoin College in 1998.

On November 1st, Steve will begin a new position at Cray, Inc., which is headquartered in Seattle, WA.
