Compose - the DOE CSGF Annual Essay Contest Journal
|
 |
One of the duties of a DOE CSGF fellow is to maintain an
up-to-date online summary of his or her research (included on
the fellows' profile
pages). These summaries, with advisers and other specialists as
their primary target audience, are generally written at a level of
technical expertise that makes them less accessible to the general populace.
To provide an opportunity for current and former fellows to write about
their work with a broader, non-technical audience
in mind, the DOE CSGF launched its Annual Essay Contest in 2005.
The competition, open to current CSGF fellows and alumni, requires
participants to author a brief essay on a topic of personal importance,
written for a non-science audience. The purpose of this competition
is to encourage better communication of computational science and
engineering and its value to society to non-expert audiences.
The winning essay will receive an iPhone with one year’s paid service
contract and, if warranted, other essays may be selected for Honorable Mention
and receive cash prizes of $500. In addition, the winners receive
the opportunity to work with a professional science writer to
critique and copy-edit their essays. The finished products are
presented in the electronic journal Compose
