Integration of Computational Chemistry and
Mathematica into Quantum Chemistry
1996 marked the third year in which the Department of Energy, through
the auspices of the UCES project, presented the
Undergraduate Computational Science award.
Awards were presented for seven submissions, and two
were granted honorable mention. Principal authors were
guests of the Department of Energy at an awards exposition and luncheon held
at the Holiday Inn Capitol Hill in Washington, D. C., September 20, 1996
The keynote address at the luncheon was presented by David Nelson, Associate
Director of Energy Research for the Office of Computational and
Technology Research at the Department of Energy.
Dr. David Nelson
An electronic presentation/poster session was held in the afternoon at
which the awardees exhibited their projects, almost all of which
were presented via the World Wide Web. This session was open
to the public and was attended by representatives
from government, academia, and industry.
1996 was also the first year in which the awards program received
corporate sponsorship from companies interested in supporting
computational science education. These sponsors --- Jones and
Bartlett, Publishers, TELOS/Springer-Verlag, John Wiley and Sons,
and the IEEE Computer Society --- provided additional prizes for
the winning entries and honorable mentions.
