Introduction

This module presents the problem of computing the electric potential at a specific point due to a continuous charge distribution on one dimensional wire. Such a problem involves: modeling, analysis, symbolic and numeric calculations. In our quest towards the solution, we will utilize a Computer Algebra System (MAPLE or MATHEMATICA) and we will examine various computer codes, written in Fortran or C, in order to appreciate the power and limitations of various numeric and symbolic methods. The modelling process as well as the specific techniques and ideas presented in this module can also be used to solve other similar problems of our physical world. For example, the same general method could be used to compute the potential at a specific point, due to a gravitational force.

Two variations of the "electric potential" problem are explored in this module:

  • The Finite Length Wire
    and
  • The Infinite Length Wire. -->
