Friction
Extension

  1. Perform the experiment on the modeling page with surfaces with a known coefficient of kinetic friction. Project the time it will the block to traverse the board length.
  2. A problem that is closely related to the one discussed in this section is that of a wheel rotating on an axle. Define a coefficient of kinetic friction (k) and an initial rotational velocity, then time how long it takes the wheel to come to a complete stop.
  3. Frictional force problems are closely related to energy problems. Friction does negative work on a system thereby removing energy from the system.
