Summary
The resources on this page relate to the environment and ecology. Included are links to environmental organizations, government agencies, sources of data and links to links.
Since the environment is related to many other disciplines, you should also look at the resources on the biology,
chemistry, geology,
and physics pages. More resources will be on
the general science page.
Environmental organizations

Center for Conservation Biology
- The Center offers a number of Conservation Biology areas for
study. Their Virtual Library of Ecology, Biodiversity, and the
Environment contains hundreds of great biology links in a
user-friendly format.

Committee for the National Institute for the Environment
- Links to data, journals, news and information about a wide
variety of issues in the environmental community.

Consortium on Green Design and Manufacturing
- CGDM encourages multidisciplinary research and education on
environmental management and pollution prevention issues in
critical industries. Some of their
research projects would make great AiS
projects.

Defenders of Wildlife
- Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the protection of all
native wild animals and plants in their natural communities.
Their focus is what scientists consider two of the most serious
environmental threats to the planet: the accelerating rate of
extinction of species and the associated loss of biological
diversity, and habitat alteration and destruction.

Environmental Defense Fund
- The official site for the EDF, which focuses on saving the
environment by educating populations and by working with
industries and governments to modify environmentally harmful
practices. You can sign up for their weekly newsletter.

Rainforest Action Network
- There's some good research information on rain forests here, and
a lot of links.

Second Nature
- Second Nature is a nonprofit organization working to help
colleges and universities expand their efforts to make
environmentally sustainable and just action a foundation of
learning and practice. Visit
Starfish (resources and databases) or
participate in on-line
discussion groups.

Sierra Club
- The official site of the organization that works to save the
environment by influencing public policy. One of the oldest and
best known conservation organizations, with articles and news.

International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives
- ICLEI is the international environmental agency for local
governments. If you are interested in global environmental
issues, check this page for projects and resources.
Governmental Agencies
- Environmental Education at the BLM
- The Bureau of Land Management oversees a lot of our nation's
land resources. This page is targeted for students, and looks
at some of the environmental issues facing these lands.

Environmental Protection Agency
- The mission of the EPA is protect human health and to safeguard
the natural environment. The main EPA page has both search and
browse engines.

Fish and Wildlife Service
- The mission of the USFWS is to conserve, protect, and enhance
fish and wildlife and their habitats for the continuing benefit
of the American people. You will find information on wetlands,
migratory birds, endangered species and habitats.
- National Academy of Science
- The National Academy of Science publishes a huge collection of
research reports from the
National Academy Press. Reports are available in html
and pdf format (requires Acrobat reader).

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
- NOAA's goal is to promote global environmental stewardship
in order to conserve and wisely manage the nation's marine and
coastal resources. Includes the National Weather Service.

United States Geological Service
- The USGS provides the Nation with reliable, impartial
information to describe and understand the Earth. Their
Earth and Environmental Science
site has lots of links to projects and organizations of
environmental interest.
USGS Water Science offers information on many aspects of
water, along with pictures, data, maps, and an interactive
center.

Amazing Environmental Organization WebDirectory
- In addition to "Earth's Biggest Environment Search Engine," this
site offers 30 subtopics from agriculture to wildlife, each with
multiple links.

EE link
- The mission of this site is to spread information and ideas
to help users explore the environment and investigate
current issues. Projects include a list of
endangered species and an
environmental facts sheet.

EnvironLink
- An on-line environmental community with many links and projects.

Environmental primers
- These tutorials from British petroleum include acid rain and
renewable energy (click on "key texts"). There are also links
to international issues (click on "useful links").

National Environmental Data Index
- NEDI provides direct access to environmental data and
information descriptions, and thereby, improves awareness of and
facilitates access to data and information holdings.

Natural Resources Research Information Pages
- Intended as "an Internet resource guide for natural resources,"
this site offers hundreds of Web resources categorized by type
(institutions and organizations, government agencies, databases
and literature, conferences and research news, and
outdoor recreation research) and then by region and country of
origin.

The Mining Company's Guide to the Environment
- Prepared guides to many subjects of environmental interest, such
as acid rain and ozone, with news and features.

Aquatic Ecology Page
- Links to anything related to the water environment.

Explores!
- Florida State University's online answer to the Weather Channel
lets you know what weather's like in other areas. Provides
lots of good information on weather statistics, patterns, and
more.

EPA Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds
- A searchable on-line database and a huge store of publicly
available information about wetlands, waste water, etc., from
the EPA. Maps are also available as part of this useful
resource.
- Globe Program
- Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment is a
worldwide network of students, teachers, and scientists working
together to study and understand the global environment. GLOBE
students make environmental observations at or near their
schools and report their data through the Internet. Scientists
use GLOBE data in their research and provide feedback to the
students. You must register to be involved in this program,
but you will probably find a ready source of data for an
environmental project.

Man and the Biosphere Species Database
- The MAB Program is developing worldwide databases of vascular
plant and vertebrate animal occurrences within MAB Biosphere
Reserves. Currently, the databases contain data from 273
Biosphere Reserves in 76 countries.

Population Ecology Home Page
- The purpose of this home page is to integrate information on
quantitative population studies on the Web. It helps to
find population models and data that can be used in research and
educational projects. Lecture courses and electronic
publications address major problems in population ecology.

Water Quality of San Francisco Bay
- This site details the water quality component of efforts by the
U.S. Geological Survey to research the coastal ecosystems of the
Bay area and how they are impacted by human disturbances. It's
interesting reading and well presented, with an excellent
glossary to help with technical terms.
- Water Resource Management, Inc.
- Water Resource Management is a company whose product is modeling
and simulation tools for the environmental community. The page
includes examples, software and Java-enabled simulations on
water management.
Air and Water Pollution

Air Pollution
- This site is part of a physical chemistry class, but is still
very informative even if you're not in the class itself. Lots of
"slides" on causes, effects, and remediation for air pollution.

Envirofacts Warehouse
- EPA's public access to data on chemical usage, pollutant
discharge and toxic waste sites. There is a searchable
geographic database and you can even produce a maps of
demographics by block. Way cool!

Environmental Research Software
- Environmental Research Software is dedicated to developing and
publishing scientific and engineering software for environmental
topics. Available software includes
MINEQL+ (for chemical equilibrium),
ALCHEMI (for modeling aluminum in water), and
GRiDS (for modeling transport of chemicals in rivers).

NCSC Environmental Programs
- This group's mission is to model and predict environmental
impact. You will find a wide variety of projects listed, as
well as modeling tools and methods.

Radon in Earth, Air and water
- A primer with links to the origin and problems associated with
terrestrial radon.
Energy and the environment
- Country Analysis Briefs
- This page gives extensive energy production and usage data on
a country-by-country basis.
- Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network
- This Department of Energy site offers lots of information on a
variety of topics related to all forms of renewable energy.
It also includes data such as fuel efficiency for automobiles
and advice for making buildings more energy efficient.
- Garbage
- This online exhibit looks at creating sustainable environments
that reduce a community's garbage. Includes information on
hazardous and solid waste.

Renewable Energy
- A good source of information for environmental issues related to
energy: global warming, air pollution, biomass, etc.

Residential Energy Efficiency Database
- This is a great site for information and encouragement in being
energy efficient. Of a dozen categories, Residential Indoor Air
Quality alone has dozens of subtopics. There's also an extensive
glossary of housing terms and data topics such as insulation and
solar influx.

Solstice
- Solstice is "your online source for sustainable energy
information" and its very impressive. Among the many gems here:
interactive multimedia CD-ROMs like The Greening of the White
House,
The Suns Joules multimedia encyclopedia on renewable
energy, School Energy Doctor software, tons more.
- Wind Resource Database
- Knowing where a high wind resource may exist is valuable to a
wind energy project. The National Wind technology Center
identifies and gathers data for wind resource maps of the United
States and foreign countries.
Global warming

EPA Global Warming Site
- This site has information about the source of the problem,
greenhouse gas releases, impacts, and what is being done.
Includes slide shows.

Stratospheric Ozone and Human Health Project
- The Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center's home page for
the Stratospheric Ozone and Human Health Project. Stratospheric
ozone protects the Earth's surface from high levels of
biologically damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The purpose
of this site is to provide data and resources in the areas of
ultraviolet (UV) radiation, ozone, and human health impacts of
UV exposure.
- US Global Change Data
- GCDIS is a collection of information systems operated by
government agencies involved in global change research. It
provides global change information to scientific and
government agencies, which includes multidisciplinary data from
atmospheric science, ecology, oceanography, as well as economics
and sociology.

US Global Change Research Information Office
- Provides access to data and information on global change
research, adaptation/mitigation strategies and technologies, and
global change-related educational resources on behalf of the US
Global Change Research Program and its participating Federal
Agencies and Organizations.
